What You Really Need to Know

Applying for a NIE number is required if you want to live and work in Spain. However, what's actually more important is becoming a resident. By becoming a resident, you automatically receive a NIE number.

How to Become a Resident (EU Citizens)

As an EU citizen, you become a resident by registering in the Central Register for EU Citizens.

It's only possible to become a resident by registering in the Central EU Register in Spain. Unfortunately, this cannot be done through a consulate or embassy in Belgium or the Netherlands.

Important Distinction

⚠️ Note: You can apply for a NIE number through a consulate or embassy. However, this document alone is not sufficient to legally live and work in Spain.
